Do you know that 40,000 Check dams have been built in more than 7,000 villages in Gujarat in the last 4 years? 25,000 Check dams have been built in this year itself. Compare this with 4,000 Check dams built in Gujarat before that in the 40 years. Water table that had depleted in the last so many years went up by 5 to 10 metres. 2,50,000 hectares of additional land could be protectively irrigated resulting in an increase of more than Rs. 625 crores in the crop production.
Gujarat is all set to become the Indian Trade Hub for the World Trade. Ports handles 85 million tonnes i.e. 20 % of the Indian Trade Cargo compared to 4.6 % in the year 1990. It has the highest number of private sector ports in the country. In the last one year there has been a substantial rise in the Infrastructure capabilities and cargo handling capacity of Gujarat ports. In the year 1995-96 the State's share was 70 million tonnes.
Gujarat is the first State in the country to give shape to the River-Interlinking dream project. Narmada Water flows in more than 10 rivers including Sabarmati, Mahi, Vatrak, Rupen, Hiran of the water starved regions of North & Central Gujarat. 80,000 hectares of land have benefited from this. Crop production went up by Rs. 200 crores.
Gujarat is the only state in the country to solve the water problem in a foresighted manner with a long term perspective (25 years). Water pipeline of 1,400 Kms. in length has been laid. This would be increased to 3,530 Kms. in the next 2 years. More than 1,500 villages and 35 towns have already started reaping the benefits. After the completion of the project, 8,215 villages and more than 135 towns will receive the benefits. Otherwise water in scarcity years was supplied by Tankers in most of these villages. The tanker Raj exists no more.
The height of Sardar Sarovar Dam has been raised to 100 metres. Main Canal work of 357 Kms. and Branch Canal work of 1,019 Kms. have been completed. Area measuring 1,28,000 hectares could be irrigated. Rehabilitation work to raise the height to 110 metres has been completed in Gujarat. Immediately after this height, power generation would begin.
