Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi, 52, is a man with a difference.
Result, not rhetoric, matters to him. A blend of practical
wisdom and long-term vision, Shri Narendra Modi has brought
about a qualitative change in the state's governance with
his new ideas for development and result-oriented approach.
He talks in terms of specifics, not generalities. Information
technology for him is not just a cliché or a dream
to sell but a day-to-day reality. His closest companion, his
associates say, is his computer. He himself checks on the
web newspapers every morning. And almost every morning (minus
days when he isn't in the State capital), he uses the video-conferencing
facility to speak directly to residents of a chosen village.
This establishes a direct rapport between the citizens and
their first servant and is a genuine achievement of e-governance.

Shri
Narendra Modi is a quick decision-maker. This was
apparent when, earlier this year, the Union government
gave the necessary sanction that allowed Gujarat to
raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar dam from 90
metres to 95 metres. The Modi government began construction
work within an hour.
For
quick implementation, that is a difficult record to
beat. When the waters of the Tapi river began to overflow
from the Ukai dam, the adjoining hydropower plant
- shut down for long because of lack of water –
was reactivated at 2.30 am courtesy an express Chief
Ministerial order. A file that reaches the

stays there for more than two days. So, there is a new dynamism
that has injected a rare nip in governance. |
|
| Shri
Narendra Modi's early public career was shaped by the influences
of the Nava Nirman Andolant of 1974 and the Emergency, 1975-77.
In his struggle for social justice, farmers' rights and general
probity in politics, Shri Modi often harks back to the idealism
of his early years which he imbibed from Lok Nayak Shri Jayprakash
Narayan. Having experienced life as an ordinary, middle class
citizen, he has a dislike for red tapism.

Shri
Modi's endeavor is to make government more accessible
to the people. In his personal life, Shri Modi is a
voracious reader and a quiet, thinking individual. He
is also a devoted writer, crafting essays and poems
frequently. His writing focuses on socio-cultural issues
and his literary passion is best demonstrated by his
well-know book Sangharsh ma Gujarat (Gujarat under Struggle).
Modi
leads a fairly spartan lifestyle, inspired by the great
soul he considers his spiritual guru, Swami Vivekananda.
As a golden rule Shri Narendra Modi deposits the gifts
he receives as Chief Minister in the state treasury

missions. The British Broadcasting Corporation hailed Shri
Modi as Gujarat's Man for the 21st Century.
He believes such praise only places greater pressure and a
heavier obligation on him. He has to deliver on the promises
of the government and make life genuinely better for every
single resident of Gujarat. Governance, for him, is not a
power game but only a trust placed on him by the people. This
he never forgets.
